AWS Service Overview

Amazon Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) Overview

A load balancer is a device that acts as a reverse proxy and distributes network or application traffic across a number of servers. Load balancers are used to increase capacity (concurrent users) and reliability of applications.

Amazon Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) automatically distributes incoming application traffic across multiple EC2 instances. ELB also automatically scales its request handling capacity to meet the demands of application traffic.

Amazon EBS Overview

Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) provides persistent block storage volumes for use with Amazon EC2 instances.

Each EBS volume is automatically replicated within its Availability Zone to protect you from component failure.

With EBS, you can scale your usage up or down within minutes.

EBS is designed for application workloads that benefit from fine tuning for performance, cost and capacity.

AWS Snowball and Snowmobile Overview

Snowball is a transport solution in AWS for petabyte-scale data.

Snowball uses secure appliances that will be delivered and later collected back, to transfer large amounts of data into and out of the AWS cloud.

Transferring data with Snowball is secure, and costs much less compared to high-speed Internet.

AWS Storage Gateway Overview

AWS Storage Gateway is a hybrid cloud storage that provides seamless and secure integration with local on-premises IT infrastructure, and optimized data transfer.

Customers can use it in remote offices and datacenters for hybrid cloud workloads such as migration, storage tiering etc.

The Storage Gateway virtual appliance can connect to your local infrastructure as a file server, or as a local disk volume etc.

AWS Glacier Overview

Glacier is a secure, durable, and extremely low-cost cloud storage service for data archiving and long-term backup. Customers can reliably store large or small amounts of data for as little as $0.004 per gigabyte per month.

Glacier Data Retrieval Process

  1. To retrieve Amazon S3 data stored in Amazon Glacier, initiate a retrieval request using the Amazon S3 APIs or the Amazon S3 Management Console.

Amazon S3 Overview

S3 stands for Simple Storage Service. S3 is a secure, durable, highly scalable object storage

S3 Feature Highlights

  1. An S3 object consist of a key (a name), value (actual data), and metadata (version id and other data about your data).

  2. Files in S3 are stored as simple key/value pairs in Buckets. An S3 bucket is synonymous to a folder.

AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) Overview

AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) enables you to create and manage AWS users, groups and roles, and use permissions to allow and deny their access to AWS services and resources.

For using IAM, you can use the web based IAM console, the AWS CLI, or the API or SDKs.

Benefits of IAM

  1. IAM provides centralized control and shared access to your AWS account.

About

CloudMaterials is my blog to share notes and learning materials on Cloud and Data Analytics. My current focus is on Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

I like to write and I try to document what I learn to share with others. I believe that knowledge is useless unless you share it; the more you share, the more you learn.
